The 2010 U.S. Census determined that 4.6 million Americans have a learning disability. Many experts believe that this number vastly underrepresents the true number, as the number of people with dyslexia alone may be 20 percent of the U.S. population of over 329 million. Of high school students identified with a learning disability, 94 percent request accommodations or modifications while only 17 percent of college students do so. This could negatively affect their learning, and therefore we have an opportunity to help them.
This 12-hour (12 CEU) seminar is for academic educators, clinical instructors, counselors and therapists, and healthcare providers interested in learning more about learning disabilities and how to help clients or students with learning disabilities to thrive. Within the 12 hours, you will learn about dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia and nonverbal learning disabilities as well as ADHD, anxiety and depression. We will review how to set up accommodations or modifications and design an education experience for a student. Early-bird deadline to save $24 off the fee: Oct. 30. Instructor: Jason Ashby, PT.
Course ObjectivesCognitive Objectives The learner will:
1. Identify aspects of federal laws pertaining to education of individuals with disabilities.
2. Identify types of learning disabilities.
3. Differentiate between accommodations and modifications to an educational curriculum.
4. Discriminate between types of learning disabilities and other related disabilities.
5. Associate between appropriate accommodations for different types of learning disabilities/related disabilities.
6. Evaluate the appropriateness of accommodations in didactic healthcare education.Affective Objectives The learner will:
1. Accept responsibility for education of future healthcare providers, as evidenced by attendance in the full 12 hours of the course.
2. Accept responsibility for educating students with learning disabilities as evidenced by the ability to identify appropriate accommodations and modifications.Psychomotor Objectives 1. The learner will practice performing documentation using accommodations for students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and other learning disabilities.
CANCELLATION POLICY: If you need to withdraw or transfer from this class, you must notify the Continuing Education office by telephone at 440.525.7116 four or more business days (Monday through Friday) prior to the class date. You will be refunded the course fee minus a $25 processing fee. No refunds or transfers are allowed without at least four business days’ notice. In most cases, you may substitute someone else to take your place with no processing fee.
